Pendant, Wall, Ceiling or Floor? A Plain-English Guide to Light Fittings
Lighting jargon can make a simple decision feel complicated. Here's what each fitting type genuinely does best — no showroom-speak.
Pendant lighting
Hung from the ceiling on a cord or rod, pendants are the anchor of kitchens, dining tables and stairwells. Hang them low over tables (about 75–85 cm above the surface) and in odd numbers over islands.
Wall lights
The secret weapon of cosy rooms. Wall lights free up floor space, wash walls with soft light and make narrow hallways feel wider. Fit them at roughly eye level.
Ceiling lights
Flush and semi-flush fittings are the workhorses for low ceilings — a fabric drum diffuses light evenly without dazzle.
Table & desk lamps
Atmosphere and task light in one. See our full table lamp buying guide for sizing rules.
Floor lamps
A tripod or arc floor lamp fills the awkward dark corner every living room has — and doubles as sculpture.
Wall reading lights
Adjustable spotlights beside the bed beat a bedside lamp when space is tight — each sleeper gets their own beam.
Whatever the room, the Ösedum collection covers all six — with complimentary mainland shipping over $50.
